Get an Accounting Degree in Wyoming

CNBC rated Wyoming’s economy as the 14th best in the country in a 2016 analysis.  The state’s unemployment equaled that of the country overall as of March 2017 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Wyoming is particularly favorable for business because it does not have an individual or corporate income tax. More than 1,800 accountants are working in Wyoming, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, and this number is growing.

Wyoming is largely rural. Its major industries are mineral extraction, agriculture, tourism and manufacturing. The introduction of hydraulic fracturing created a small boom in Wyoming, and manufacturing contributes $1.25 billion to the state’s economy. Major employers include Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming, First Interstate Bank, Peabody Energy, The Grand Teton Lodge, Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Most certified public accounting (CPA) firms are small, local companies.

The average annual income for an accountant in Montana is $66,690 according to May 2016 figures from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. While the entry-level wages for accountants are nearly identical in Casper and Cheyenne – both slightly under $44,000 – experienced accountants in Casper earn an exceptionally high income with an average of $136,890.

Wyoming's Board of Certified Public Accountants regulates CPA licensing in the state. They require that you first earn your bachelor's degree in an accounting concentration or the equivalent. You'll then have to pass two exams, the multi-part CPA exam and an ethics exam, and work for full year in the field of accounting under the direction of a CPA with an active license.

To maintain your license, you'll need to take continuing education courses. The Wyoming Society of CPAs (https://www.wyocpa.org/) offers professional development programs, continuing education classes and networking opportunities for practicing professionals and aspiring CPAs.
