Rhode Island Accounting Schools

Rhode Island used to be a major manufacturing hub. In 2017, the state's economy is led by jobs in finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing.

The Labor Market Information report from the Rhode Island Department of Labor & Training reports that the field of accounting will grow by 13.6 percent, adding 607 new jobs a year on average between 2014 and 2024. The average wage is pegged at $79,102. The same survey reports an average starting income of $57,970 a year, with senior certified public accountants (CPAs) earning $94,870.

Though a small state, Rhode Island is home to some large employers. CVS has its headquarters here, and General Dynamics Electric Boat has a large presence in the state constructing submarines. Financial services are a major economic force. Bank of America and Fidelity Investments are the well-known players. The 'Big Four' CPA firms of KPMG and Ernst & Young also maintain offices here. Local companies like Sullivan & Co. have a significant regional presence. Providence is the commercial center of the state and that is where most of the accounting jobs for large CPA firms and corporations are located.

Rhode Island's Board of Accountancy administers the Uniform CPA exam as well as the required ethics exam. In order to earn your CPA license, you must earn a Bachelor of Arts degree with at least 24 semester hours of accounting courses. Rhode Island also requires that you complete a year of experience by working in public practice with a CPA firm, corporation or government entity.

Proof of continuing education is required in Rhode Island to keep your CPA or certified management accountant (CMA) license current. The Rhode Island Society of CPAs (http://www.riscpa.org/) has numerous continuing education options and offers networking events that can enhance your career. The Northeast Regional Council (http://nerc.imanet.org/) of the Institute for Management Accountants offers similar networking opportunities, advocacy programs and continuing education classes.
