Once the envy of the country for its astounding economic boom, North Dakota was hard hit by the fall in oil prices which has greatly reduced the amount of fracking in the Bakken.  Wells sit idle while companies wait to see what the future holds for them.

However, North Dakota has a number of other industries to help sustain its economy.

Among the major employers are manufacturers like Bobcat, LM Wind Power Blades, John Deere, Marvin Windows and CNH. Agriculture and food processors have a major presence; these employers include Cloverdal, American Crystal Sugar, Cargill, ADM and potato giant J. R. Simplot. Among certified public accountant (CPA) firms, Eide Bailly dominates; the firm was actually founded here as Eide Helmeke, which later merged with an out-of-state firm.

The North Dakota Workforce Intelligence Network expects the number of accountants to increase by 15.5 percent through 2024.  Accountants in North Dakota earned an average wage of $58,340 as of 2016.  Those with experience averaged $67,920.

North Dakota's CPA licensing requires that you earn your bachelor's degree. You must attain 150 semester hours, 24 of which are accounting courses, and another 24 in general business. You can take the CPA exam's four parts separately and in any order, and you also must pass the American Institute of CPAs' ethics exam. You must be able to document a year of accounting experience supervised by a licensed CPA.

The North Dakota Society of CPAs (http://www.ndscpa.org/) has a wealth of resources, from group insurance rates and discounted business services to continuing professional education courses and networking events. The Red River Valley Chapter (http://ima-northernlights.imanet.org/chapters/red_river_valley.htm) of the Northern Lights Council (http://ima-northernlights.imanet.org/) of the Institute for Management Accountants is the only chapter in the state, but it does offer services of value to certified management accountants (CMAs) throughout North Dakota.
