Studying Accounting in New Hampshire

New Hampshire enjoys one of the more robust state economies in the nation. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2017, its 3.8 percent unemployment rate was the third lowest in the United States.

Though no Fortune 500 companies call New Hampshire home, the state has some well-known companies such as Timberland, AutoDesk and Stonyfield Farm. General Electric, BAE Systems and Osram Sylvania have significant operations here. The state’s tech startup scene makes the national press with firms such as Dyn, Autodesk, and Texas Instruments helping to drive the economy. Ernst & Young is the only 'big four' firm with New Hampshire offices, but many local firms are sizeable, including Nathan Wechsler & Co. and Bigelow & Co.

New Hampshire’s Employment Security Department predicts 12.5 percent growth in the accounting profession between 2014 and 2024, with the number of accountants rising from 4,727 to 5,317 by the end of that decade.

Entry-level accountants in the state earn an average of $48,693 a year, according to New Hampshire Employment Security's updated June 2016 figures. The same source reports the average income for experienced accountants to be $83,762.

The state has recently changed its CPA licensure requirements, upping the number of semester hours needed to qualify as a CPA exam candidate. The New Hampshire Board of Accountancy website states that you must now have 150 semester hours and a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in order to sit for the exam. Thirty of those hours must be in accounting and 24 in business. The required amount of work experience is now a full year.

The New Hampshire Society of CPAs (http://www.nhscpa.org/) offers continuing education, advocacy programs and networking events for students and active CPAs. For certified management accountants (CMAs), the Northeast Regional Council (http://nerc.imanet.org/) of the Institute for Management Accountants includes chapters in New Hampshire.
