Study Accounting in Nevada

In March 2016, CNBC titled an article “Nevada economy plays winning hand” and went on to describe the high level of economic success that was unthinkable in the aftermath of the great recession.  The jobless rate is the lowest in approximately eight years.

Accountants and auditors in Nevada benefit greatly from the state’s stellar levels of economic growth.  In fact, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation ranked accounting as the 18th highest occupation in demand for the period between 2014 and 2024.  The Department predicts that 478 jobs will become available each year on average during this period.

The hospitality, recreation and amusement sector is the largest in the state and accounts for a larger percentage of the Nevada economy than it does in any other state, according to World Book Online. Nevada is home to four Fortune 500 companies, all of which are in that sector: Las Vegas Sands, Caesar's Entertainment, MGM Resorts, and Wynn Resorts. The second largest sector is finance, insurance and real estate. Both sectors are highly sensitive to the economy, so they are performing at high levels at the moment. Meanwhile, other sectors are growing despite the state's economic condition. The 2016 Inc. 5000 list tallies 20 innovative Nevada companies. Companies include Lead Genesis, ABUV Media, and Climate Control Experts. Zappos, the online shoe retailer, is headquartered in Henderson.

Wages for accountants in Nevada held steady during tough economic times. The average income in 2016, according to state statistics, is $64,010. The top 90 percent averaged $96,075 as of the same year.

Nevada State Accounting Board requirements for taking the certified public accounting (CPA) exam specify that you must earn your bachelor's degree with a transcript documenting 150 semester hours of coursework. You need to have 30 semester hours of advanced accounting classes covering financial accounting, cost accounting, auditing and tax. You also need 27 hours of business courses including business law. Once you pass both the CPA exam and an ethics exam, you need to document two years of public accounting experience with at least 1,000 hours in the attest function, of which 700 must be in auditing.

The Nevada Society of CPAs (http://www.nevadacpa.org/) offers resources and scholarships for students. For licensed CPAs, the organization leads advocacy initiatives, and hosts networking and continuing education classes. The Institute of Management Accountants has a chapter in Las Vegas (http://www.imalvc.com/) that offers a full calendar of networking events and continuing professional education classes.
