Get an Accounting Degree in Maine

As of 2016, Maine is still struggling to recover from the great recession. The University of Maine presented an economic analysis of the state and stressed that Maine’s economy is continuing its shift from industries that produce goods to lower paying service industries. However, the news for Maine's accounting profession is less grim. Although Maine's economy is driven by agriculture, fishing, tourism and real estate - all hard hit during the recession, the professional services sector of the economy wasn't so hard hit. The Maine Center for Workforce Research and Information predicts that accounting jobs will grow 6.5 percent through 2024.

There are no Fortune 500 companies in Maine. The economy is driven by a number of small companies. L.L. Bean is perhaps the best known. Other companies like Fairchild Semiconductor Cianbro Construction and the animal health company Idexx are ranked as top employers in the state. Banking is also more local than national. Bank of America, Key Bank, and TD Bank are here, but New England and state banks like Bangor Savings Bank have a large market share. Of the 'Big Four' certified public accountant (CPA) firms, only Ernst & Young has offices in the state. Local firms like BerryDunn are growing aggressively. Other notable CPA firms in the state include Baker, Newman Noyes and MacDonald, Page & Co.

Income levels in Maine are lower than the national average. Starting CPAs can expect an annual average income of $49,275 and experienced professionals can earn $73,965, according to 2016 figures from the Maine Center for Workforce Research and Information. The Center reports differences in earning potential across the state. Accountants in Portland earn on average $69,720 a year. Bangor CPAs earn an average income of $63,540. Dover-Durham professionals top the list with an average income of $75,560.

Getting your CPA license in Maine begins with completing your baccalaureate degree, which requires accounting and auditing semester hours. You must document two years' experience working in public accounting with at least 400 work hours in audit review compilation and advisory services. You also must pass the state-administered CPA exam.

Getting involved with the Maine Society of CPAs (https://www.mecpa.org/) opens up networking opportunities and can help you complete the continuing education requirement for maintaining your CPA license. Similarly, the Institute of Management Accountants offers similar services and opportunities for certified management accountants (CMAs). Its Northeast Regional Council (http://nerc.imanet.org/) includes chapters in Maine.
