Studying Accounting in Idaho

Idaho is effectively recovering from the recession that occurred in the late 2000s. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Idaho had the 12th lowest unemployment rate in the country as of March 2017.

Real personal income in the state is rising. As of May 2016, the average income is $71,960 for accountants in Idaho, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Idaho Department of Labor, 2014 through 2024, projections expect the profession to grow 27.5 percent during the decade. It reports an entry wage of $44,610 with an average of $71,330. Idaho Falls accountants earn the most; an experienced accountant earns $109,980.

Traditionally, the top industries in the state are agriculture, manufacturing and mining. However, technology is coming on fast. The Idaho Business Review reports that the state has the second-fastest growing tech sector in the country. Idaho's only Fortune 500 company is Micron Technology. Other large companies include J.R. Simplot, Boise Cascade and Motive Power. KPMG and Deloitte are joined by regional and local companies like Galusha Higgins & Galusha and Eide Bailly.

The path to licensure as a certified public accountant (CPA) in Idaho begins with earning a baccalaureate degree that requires 150 total credit hours - 24 in accounting and 24 in general business. You must clock 2,000 hours working in the field under the supervision of a licensed and active Idaho CPA. The work experience can be achieved on a part-time basis but has to be completed within three years. You also must pass the ethics exam. You must be a resident of Idaho or intend to be a resident of the state in order to be licensed here.

The Idaho Society of CPAs (http://www.nevadacpa.org/) is involved with advocacy of issues relevant to the profession. The organization offers a full calendar of networking events and continuing education classes. The Institute of Management Accountants' Pacific Northwest Council (http://www.ima-pnc.org/) has a chapter in the state and also hosts state-wide and regional networking events and licensure classes.
