State of Wyoming's Marketing Industry
The Park State has deep roots in mineral extraction (especially coal mining) and tourism - the federal government owns around half of the land. Lured by marketing campaigns, millions of visitors flock to Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park and Independence Rock on an annual basis.
The biggest news for Wyoming's economy in the past decade has been energy. Forbes rated Wyoming #5 on its 2012 list of "10 States That Will Boom Over the Next 5 Years." New natural energy sources have spurred fast-growing per-capita income, a spike in real estate and job creation.
But Wyoming is not a place with a vibrant marketing industry. Its focus on volatile energy industries has led to lack of diversity in other sectors. The state has one of the lowest concentrations of marketing managers in the country (49 in 2011, according to Wyoming Labor Market Information in 2012) and relatively few advertising agencies.
Job Prospects for Wyoming Marketing Graduates
The job market for Wyoming marketing graduates is vanishingly small. For 2011-2021, the state's Department of Workforce Services is estimating openings for marketing managers will increase by 16.1% (8 jobs), PR specialists by 12% (46 jobs) and market research analysts by 16.9% (45 jobs).
If you can't find employment with boutique design agencies like Big Idea Advertising Co. or Portis Group, you may have better luck with large employers like the University of Wyoming, mining manufacturers or tourist organizations.
Or you try out your cowboy boots. Agricultural marketing has a solid footing in a state where 78% of total agricultural receipts in 2006 could be attributed to cattle, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Many farm equipment manufacturers market their goods directly to buyers.
Wyoming Schools for Marketing
There are only three accredited marketing schools in Wyoming - not surprising for the least populous state in the nation. Here are two for comparison:

UW's College of Business offers a Bachelor of Science with a major in marketing, an MBA (plus an online Executive MBA) and a doctorate in marketing with an emphasis on sustainability. The college is fully accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Undergraduates at Casper's School of Business and Industry can pursue a Marketing Certificate or an Associate of Science in marketing. The latter is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.
Thanks in part to Wyoming's tax base, Casper has one of the lowest tuition rates in the western United States. It also holds the honor of being ranked #5 on the list of "10 Most Beautiful Community Colleges in America.
Professional Marketing Organizations in Wyoming
You won't find many marketing organizations in Wyoming. In fact, you'll be hard pressed to find any at all. If you're looking for networking events and employment postings, you may need to try trade-based associations instead.
With more than 62,000 small businesses in Wyoming as of 2012, according to the Small Business Association (SBA), graduates of the state’s top business schools often pursue bachelor’s degrees in business administration or specialized MBA programs in entrepreneurship as a way to prepare for an independent business venture of their own.
Energetic and innovative business school students earning an undergraduate degree or MBA in entrepreneurship, marketing, or accounting learn to create and manage small businesses from top to bottom— preparing them to finance small business loans, conduct market research, manage finances, manage daily operations, find and manage qualified staff, and more.
As of 2011, 95.9 percent of all employers in Wyoming were small businesses, with the majority of small businesses having fewer than 100 employees. These small businesses employed 130,745 workers, which equates to two-thirds of the state’s private workforce.
In that year alone, Wyoming’s small business leaders created 3,333 new jobs, many of which were formed in the state’s largest industries:

Small business does not mean small revenue or a strictly local scope. In 2012, 73.8 percent of businesses that exported from Wyoming were small firms, which together generated 61 percent of Wyoming’s total international and domestic exports. In 2013, the annual income of sole proprietors in Wyoming increased by 6.8 percent to a total of $3.2 billion.

The University of Wyoming offers two MBA options. The full-time program is a traditional on-campus degree requiring 42 credit hours of classes. The accelerated schedule requires 16 months of intense study, with a curriculum that blends theory and application; teamwork, leadership and superior written and oral communication skills are emphasized. The school offers international study trips and options for field work, as well as opportunities, both on and off campus, to network with global and local companies. The other option is the Executive MBA for experienced managers. Admission is competitive, and those who are accepted into this program complete it as part of a cohort of highly-motivated high achievers in their fields. This 30-credit-hour program is offered 100 percent online, though students have the option of participating in on-campus activities. Both programs are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
