State of Kansas's Marketing Industry

Aerospace and agriculture are key economic drivers in America's Bread Basket. Corn, soybeans, wheat, cattle, dairy - no matter which way you look at it, Kansas is feeding the nation. Crops helped cushion the state from the worst of the recession, though the 2012 drought hit farmers particularly hard.

Those flat plains have also nurtured a strong aviation sector. Boeing, Cessna, Learjet and Spirit AeroSystems have a foothold in Kansas and rub shoulders with the state's three Fortune 500 names: Sprint Nextel, Seaboard and YRC Worldwide. All are supported by energetic marketers.

Energetic doesn't always mean numerous, though. The size of Kansas's marketing industry is on a par with its neighbor Nebraska and relatively small compared to coastal states. Top-grossing marketing firms like PlattForm might pull in as much as $38+ million a year.

Job Prospects for Kansas Marketing Graduates

Employment prospects for Kansas marketing graduates look respectable. For 2010-2020, the state's Department of Labor is projecting middle-of-the-road growth for market research analysts and marketing specialists (36.6%), PR specialists (16.8%), and marketing managers (11.3%).

Expect modest wages. In 2011, the median annual salary for a Kansas marketing manager was $98,700 (compared to the U.S. median of $116,000, as pegged by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Then again, the 2011-2012 cost of living in the Sunflower State is nearly 6.3% below the national average, according to the state Department of Commerce. In 2012, Forbes puts the average home price at just $122,100.

If props, crops and business-to-business marketing positions aren't your style, you could try ad agencies. Apart from the aforementioned PlattForm, the big names include Sullivan Higdon & Sink and Callahan Creek. Only one Kansas marketing firm - Sweet Spot Marketing - made it onto Inc.'s Top 5000 list of America's fastest-growing private companies in 2012.

To expose students to real-world situations, the school has developed a first-year "Business School Experience", study-abroad opportunities and a mentorship program. In 2013, the school presented its inaugural international business conference.

2. Emporia State University (ESU) (http://www.emporia.edu/business/index.html)

Students at ESU's School of Business, accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, can opt for a Bachelor of Science in Business with a major in marketing, or for an MBA. There is, however, no specific concentration in marketing for the MBA.

ESU encourages undergraduates to participate in their internship program, working for companies throughout Kansas. MBA case teams are regularly assigned opportunities to partner with existing businesses on projects and development possibilities.
